According to a new report from Bloomberg, Apple is ‘designing and producing its own OLED displays’ for future devices. The tech giant currently outsources this particular component . Rumors are that Apple has a secret manufacturing facility near its headquarter in California for this specific purpose. But we can’t expect to see the technology anytime soon. Bloomberg suggests Apple Watch may be the first to make use of this in-house technology.
“The technology giant is making a significant investment in the development of next-generation MicroLED screens, say the people, who requested anonymity to discuss internal planning. MicroLED screens use different light-emitting compounds than the current OLED displays and promise to make future gadgets slimmer, brighter and less power-hungry”.
Apple’s work on its own MicroLED display technology may be trouble for leading display manufacturers such as LG, Samsung, and Japan Display – all of which, currently, provide display panels for Apple devices.
