How to Put Your iPhone or iPad into Recovery Mode

Recovery mode saves the day when your iOS device does not act as expected. It is helpful if your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad has gone unresponsive, you have to return to a stable version of iOS from a beta, or your device isn’t upgrading through Software Update.

Generally, using the recovery mode is the last resort in many cases. Every iOS device owner should know how to use the recovery mode to restore an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad.

How to put your iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, or iPhone X into recovery mode

While iPhone 8 devices have a capacitive Home button underneath the display, the iPhone X has none. Technically speaking, all 3 devices do not come with a physical Home button. Therefore, a series of button presses activates the recovery mode.

Step#1: Turn your iPhone off.

    1. For iPhone X: Press and hold the Side button and either Volume button for 3 seconds. A pop-up with a slider will appear. Drag the slider to turn off your iPhone X.
    2. For iPhone 8 and 8 Plus: Press the Side button for 3 seconds. A slider pop-up will appear. Drag the slider towards to shutdown the device.

Step#2: Connect your device to a computer using a USB-to-Lightning cable.

Step#3: Open iTunes

Step#4: Press and release the Volume Up button. Then, press and release the Volume Down button. Now, press and hold the Side button for a few seconds. You will now see the Connect to iTunes screen.

Step#5: iTunes will now detect your device automatically.

How to put your iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus into recovery mode

Since the iPhone 7 devices do not have a physical Home button, the recovery mode can be accessed by completing a series of button presses.

Step#1: Turn your iPhone off by pressing the On/Off button for 3 seconds. A confirmation screen will appear asking to “slide to power off”. Drag the slider to turn off your iPhone.

Step#2: Connect your device to a computer with the help of a USB-to-Lightning cable.

Step#3: Open iTunes.

Step#4: Press and hold the Volume Down button till the screen tells you to “Connect to iTunes”.

Step#5: If your phone is connected to a computer running iTunes, it will get automatically detected by the software.

Step#1: Turn off your iPhone.

    1. For iPhone 6 or iPhone 6S: Press the On/Off button present on the right side of the device for 3 seconds. A on-screen confirmation slider will appear.
    2. For iPhone 5S, all iPads, or iPod touch devices: Press the On/Off button on the top for 3 seconds. Drag the on-screen confirmation slider to shut the device down.

Step#2: Press and hold the Home button down.

Step#3: Plug in your device into a computer running iTunes.

Step#4: Release the Home button once you see the Connect to iTunes screen.

Step#5: At this moment, iTunes should automatically detect your device.
